Homelab update
Jan 7, 2026Some time ago I started planting the seed of my homelab and while in essence it hasn’t evolved significally, I’ve really enjoyed spending some time tinkering and adding new changes, while learning new stuff and also doing something useful at the same time:
⇢ Hardware
| AMD Ryzen 9 3900x (12 cores / 24 threads) | same |
| 48GB RAM | same |
| 2TB SSD | same |
| 2x 2TB HDD | ★ new! |
| RTX 5060ti 16GB | ★ new! |
| Zyxel 8-Port 2.5G Multi-Gig Unmanaged Switch | ★ new! |
⇢ Services
| Proxmox | same |
| Tailscale | same |
| K3s | removed |
| Portainer (Jellyfin) | ★ new! |
| TrueNAS | ★ new! |
| OPNsense (DNS) | ★ new! |
| Komodo | ★ new! |
| dev VM | ★ new! |
Two HDD drives were added for backups. I enabled two SMB shares for both my wife and me so we can put there any data we might want to keep in the long term, keeping our laptops with less clutter. The cool thing is this can also be used with macOS TimeMachine to do automatic backups of the whole system in case something gets deleted by accident and wasn’t previously copied into the remote server.
Data is later synced every day into the cloud to keep a copy outside the homelab using the Backblaze B2B solution. All this is managed with TrueNAS.
The K3s cluster has been decomissioned in favor of Komodo to simplify the operations. I was using it to host some webs like this blog but found it a bit tedious to make any update. The Cloudflare tunnel service used to expose the webs and the GitHub action runner service have been moved there too.
I don’t discard deploying a new K3s cluster in the future or try something like Nomad, but for now, given my limited time I preferr having something easier to manage.
Now I also have a NixOS VM with GPU passthrough that I use for different tasks: from some light gaming, tinkering with local LLM models or run some more heavy services instead of spinning them up in my laptop(eg. SQL Server) Everything runs in a private network and access is managed via Tailscale
